White Days 1448 AH: Dates for Every Month and Why People Fast Them

Islamic events · 5 min read · Last updated:

The White Days (Ayyam al-Bid) are the 13th, 14th and 15th of every Hijri month. Because the Hijri month follows the Moon, these days always fall in the middle of the month, when the Moon is full or nearly full and the nights are bright, hence the name. Here you will find all their dates in 1448 AH in the Gregorian calendar, what is reported about fasting them and a practical way to remember them.

Why the middle of the month?

A Hijri month begins when the crescent appears after the conjunction. The lit part of the Moon then grows day by day until the full moon, about fourteen and a half days later. So the 13th, 14th and 15th of the month are the days when the Moon is at or near its brightest. The site’s home page shows the approximate Moon phase and its illumination for each day.

What is reported about fasting them

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ advised him to do three things: “to fast three days every month, to pray the two rak'ahs of duha, and to pray witr before sleeping” (al-Bukhari and Muslim). The three days are named in a hadith of Abu Dharr: “If you fast three days of the month, fast the thirteenth, the fourteenth and the fifteenth” (al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i). We issue no ruling: for details, such as what to do if you miss them, ask scholars in your country.

Two cases to note

  • Ramadan: the White Days are part of the obligatory fast of the month, so they are not a separate fast.
  • Dhu al-Hijjah: the 13th is the last of the days of Tashreeq, and it is reported that these days are not fasted, so scholars draw attention to it. In 1448 AH it falls on Wednesday 19 May 2027.

Why might the date differ in your country?

The dates above follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. If the month begins on a different day in your country after the crescent is sighted, the White Days move a day earlier or later. That is why the site’s pages offer the “Adjust the day” option. A practical tip: check the Hijri date used in your country around the middle of the month, and fast the 13th, 14th and 15th according to it.

How to remember them each month

The easiest way is to add them to your phone calendar. On the My events & reminders page you can create a calendar file (ICS) for a yearly Hijri event, or save it in My Hijri Planner to follow its countdown. The White Days table lists the next dates for every month and highlights the nearest one, and the Hijri calendar shows each month in full.

Common questions

Why don’t they fall on the same weekdays every month?

Because a Hijri month has 29 or 30 days and a week has seven, so the 13th of the month moves through the week from one month to the next. In the table it moves one or two weekdays later each month (for example from Sunday to Monday).

Can you tell the White Days from the shape of the Moon?

Roughly, yes: they are the nights of a full or nearly full Moon, which rises around sunset and stays up all night. But the Hijri date is the reference, because the exact full moon can fall on the 14th, 15th or 16th of the month.

Are they the same as fasting on Mondays and Thursdays?

No, they are two separate practices. A White Day can still fall on a Monday or a Thursday: in Sha'ban 1448 the 13th falls on Thursday 21 January 2027.

What if my country uses a different calendar?

Fast according to the Hijri date used in your country. On the site, the “Adjust the day” option (+1 or −1) shifts every date, including the White Days table. Your choice is stored in your browser only.
