The Last Ten Nights of Ramadan 1448 AH and Laylat al-Qadr: Dates

Islamic events · 5 min read · Last updated:

The last ten nights of Ramadan are the best nights of the month, and among them is Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, of which God says: “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months” (Quran 97:3). What you need most in practice is to know exactly when each night begins, because in the Hijri calendar the night comes before its day. This article gives the dates of the last ten nights of Ramadan 1448 AH and its odd nights in the Gregorian calendar, according to Umm al-Qura.

The night begins at sunset

The Hijri day begins at sunset, so “the 21st night” is the night before the day of the 21st: it starts at sunset on the 20th. Many people forget this when converting to Gregorian dates and think the 27th night is the evening of the 27th, when it is in fact the evening of the 26th. We explain this in detail in When does the Hijri day begin?

The last ten nights of Ramadan 1448 AH

According to Umm al-Qura, Ramadan 1448 AH begins on Monday 8 February 2027 and has 29 days: its last day is Monday 8 March 2027, and Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. The last ten nights begin with the 21st night, at sunset on Saturday 27 February 2027. These are the odd nights:

NightBegins at sunset onIts day
21st nightSaturday 27 February 2027Sunday 28 February
23rd nightMonday 1 March 2027Tuesday 2 March
25th nightWednesday 3 March 2027Thursday 4 March
27th nightFriday 5 March 2027Saturday 6 March
29th nightSunday 7 March 2027Monday 8 March

Because Ramadan has 29 days that year by calculation, there is no 30th night: the evening of Monday 8 March 2027 is the eve of Eid. If your country completes the month at thirty days or starts it on a different day, these dates shift by one day.

Seeking Laylat al-Qadr

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Seek the Night of Decree in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan” (al-Bukhari). Aishah reported: “When the last ten nights began, the Messenger of God ﷺ would tighten his waist-wrapper, spend the night in worship and wake his family” (al-Bukhari and Muslim); the expression means that he strove harder in worship. Al-Tirmidhi also reports that Aishah asked the Prophet ﷺ what she should say if she knew which night was Laylat al-Qadr, and he said: “Say: O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.” As for fixing one particular night, scholars have differed; the best-known view places it among the odd nights of the last ten, so many people make an effort on all ten nights.

Practical tips

  • If you want time off work during the last ten nights, plan for roughly 28 February to 8 March 2027, with a margin of one day either side.
  • Follow your country’s announcement for the start of Ramadan and adjust the dates if it differs by a day.
  • Save the 21st night in My Hijri Planner to see its countdown, or create a calendar file for it from My events & reminders.

And the following year

In 1449 AH, Ramadan begins according to Umm al-Qura on Friday 28 January 2028; its 21st day falls on Thursday 17 February 2028, so the last ten nights begin at sunset on Wednesday 16 February 2028. Follow the month day by day in the Ramadan 1448 AH calendar and the time left in the Ramadan countdown.

Odd nights of Ramadan 1449 AH

According to Umm al-Qura, Ramadan 1449 AH begins on Friday 28 January 2028 and has 29 days; Eid falls on Saturday 26 February 2028. These are its odd nights:

Common questions

Is Laylat al-Qadr always the 27th night?

The 27th night is the most widely held view, but scholars have differed on its date, and the hadiths encourage seeking it in all the odd nights of the last ten. That is why many people make a special effort on all ten nights.

If Ramadan starts on a different day in my country, which nights are the odd ones?

What counts is the Hijri date used in your country. If Ramadan starts there one day after the Umm al-Qura calculation, every odd night moves one evening later. Simply turn on the “Adjust the day” option on the site.

At what time does the 27th night begin?

At sunset on 26 Ramadan, and the time depends on your city and the season. The site does not calculate sunset or prayer times, so check the prayer timetable for your country.

Can Ramadan have thirty days?

Yes, a Hijri month has 29 or 30 days. By the Umm al-Qura calculation, Ramadan 1448 and 1449 both have 29 days, but your country’s announcement may complete the month at thirty days if the crescent is not sighted; the 30th night then takes place and Eid moves one day later.
