Ashura 1449 AH: Date, Fasting the 9th and What Is Reported

Islamic events · 3 min read · Last updated:

Ashura is the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri year. In 1449 AH it falls, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar, on Tuesday 15 June 2027, preceded by the 9th of Muharram (Tasu'a) on Monday 14 June 2027.

The origin of the Ashura fast

Al-Bukhari reports from Ibn Abbas that when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about it, and they said: this is a good day, the day God saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, and Moses fasted it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I have more right to Moses than you,” so he fasted it and told people to fast it. This fast existed before Ramadan was prescribed; afterwards it became a recommended fast.

Its virtue and fasting the 9th

The Prophet ﷺ said of fasting on Ashura: “I hope that God will expiate through it the sins of the year before” (Muslim). He also said: “If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth” (Muslim). Many scholars therefore recommend fasting the 9th together with the 10th. We issue no ruling: for details, ask scholars in your country.

Muharram 1449 AH, the Islamic New Year, begins on Sunday 6 June 2027, so Ashura comes nine days later. Ashura 1448 AH fell on Thursday 25 June 2026.

Why can the date differ?

Ashura depends on the start of Muharram. If the month begins in your country on a different day from the one calculated by Umm al-Qura, after the crescent is sighted, Ashura moves by a day. These dates are for planning; in practice, follow the announcement of the authority in your country.

Common questions

Can you fast Ashura alone, without the 9th?

Many scholars say it is allowed, and that it is better to add the 9th because of the hadith quoted above; some also mention the 11th. In 1449 AH, 11 Muharram falls on Wednesday 16 June 2027. For details, ask scholars in your country.

Why does Ashura move in the Gregorian calendar?

Because Ashura is tied to the lunar month, and the lunar year is about eleven days shorter. It fell on Thursday 25 June 2026 in 1448 AH, falls on Tuesday 15 June 2027 in 1449, on Saturday 3 June 2028 in 1450 and on Wednesday 23 May 2029 in 1451.

How is Ashura linked to the Islamic New Year?

Both are in Muharram: the new year on the 1st and Ashura on the 10th. Once you know your country’s announcement for 1 Muharram, Ashura is nine days later.

Is Muharram a sacred month?

Yes. There are four sacred months: Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab, as in the hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Bakrah. The first three are consecutive and Rajab stands alone. Details in the Hijri months in order.

How do I know 1 Muharram in my country?

The authority in each country announces the start of Muharram, usually after looking for the crescent on the evening of 29 Dhu al-Hijjah. If your country’s announcement matches the Umm al-Qura calculation, the dates above stand; if it comes a day later, add a day to the 9th and the 10th. On the site, the “Adjust the day” option +1 shifts every date at once.
