Six Days of Shawwal 1448 AH: When to Start and How to Count
After Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, many Muslims fast six days of the month of Shawwal. Here are the limits of Shawwal 1448 AH as Gregorian dates, when you can start and a practical way to arrange the six days.
What is reported
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year” (Muslim, from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari). Scholars explain it this way: a good deed is worth ten times its value, so Ramadan is worth ten months and the six days two months.
The limits of Shawwal 1448 AH
According to the Umm al-Qura calendar:
- 1 Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr): Tuesday 9 March 2027. The day of Eid is not fasted: the prohibition on fasting the two Eid days is reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
- First possible day: Wednesday 10 March 2027 (2 Shawwal).
- Last day of Shawwal: Wednesday 7 April 2027, since the month has thirty days this year.
That gives you 29 days after Eid to fast six of them.
Consecutive or spread out?
Scholars say they can be fasted consecutively or separately on any days of Shawwal after Eid. To fast them straight after Eid, that would be Wednesday 10 to Monday 15 March 2027. To spread them over days off or over Mondays and Thursdays, plan early so the month does not slip by. On whether to make up missed Ramadan days first, ask scholars in your country.
Example: spreading them over three weeks
If you prefer Mondays and Thursdays, these are the days in Shawwal 1448 AH (computed by the site): Thursday 11 March, Monday 15 March, Thursday 18 March, Monday 22 March, Thursday 25 March and Monday 29 March 2027. The six days then end more than a week before the month does, leaving a margin if the start of the month shifts by a day.
If 1 Shawwal differs in your country
If your country completes Ramadan at thirty days, Eid and the start of the six days move one day later. Go by your country’s announcement and use the “Adjust the day” option in the Shawwal 1448 AH calendar to match the announced date. You can save the days you choose in My Hijri Planner.
Shawwal in 1449 AH
The following year, Shawwal 1449 AH (Eid al-Fitr) begins according to Umm al-Qura on Saturday 26 February 2028 and has thirty days, ending on Sunday 26 March 2028. The first possible day for the six days is Sunday 27 February 2028.
Common questions
Do I have to start on 2 Shawwal?
Many scholars do not require it: they can be fasted on any days of Shawwal after Eid, consecutively or separately. What matters is to fast six before the month ends.
How many days of Shawwal are left?
Use the date difference calculator: enter today’s date and the last day of Shawwal (Wednesday 7 April 2027 in 1448) to see the days left, in weeks as well.
What changes if Shawwal has 29 days in my country?
The month is one day shorter, so make sure you finish the six days before it ends. It is best not to leave them to the last week, so the announcement of Dhu al-Qi'dah does not catch you out.
How can I keep track of the days I have fasted?
If you fast them separately, save each day in My Hijri Planner with a name such as “Shawwal fast 1”, “Shawwal fast 2” and so on. The planner shows each entry with its Hijri and Gregorian date, and your data stays in your browser without being sent to any server.
Can the six days be combined with the White Days?
That is a question of jurisprudence with some detail to it, so ask scholars in your country. As for the dates, the White Days of Shawwal 1448 AH run from Sunday 21 to Tuesday 23 March 2027.
